All businesses in unincorporated areas (outside of city limits) in Madison County will be required to pay an occupation tax in 2009.
The occupation tax includes a $36 administration fee, along with a “per employee” fee, which is as follows:
•0-3 FT employees — $24.
•4-20 FT employees — $8 per employee.
•21-100 employees — $160 plus $6 per employee in excess of 20.
•100 or more FT employees — $640 plus $6 per employee in excess of 100.
Late fees, which won’t apply until April 1, 2009, are 10 percent of the amount due or $50 (whichever is greater).

Small business in this county are already hurting. Why do the commissioners want to hurt us even more...especially now in a major recession?
Also, many of us have full-time jobs and then have an office in our home part-time...but we're having to pay as much as larger, full-time businesses.
$36 dollar "administration fee?" That's more than the license for one person with an office in their hosue! How much does it cost to cash my check?
This isn't even going to bring in enough money to pay for the cost of "enforcement." A bunch of us had breakfast the other morning and we all decided to wait until we have our day in court to pay the $60. I expect it will cost at least 10 times how much this brings in just to drag us into court...and then we'll pay. Kind of a Madison County small business owners' protest / tea party!
Bottom line, for the home office people we are being taxed twice for exactly the same property. Anybody want to join our breakfast group and take the commissioners to court?
Don't seem right these guys just want to stomp all over the small business folk while EMC, Colonial Pipeline and Weyerhauser get whatever they want even though they poison our water and leave with no notice or care for their employees.
What a waste!!!!!!!!
