Do you remember “The Nancy Hanks?” The Nancy Hanks was an intrastate passenger train owned by the Central of Georgia Railroad that used to run between Atlanta and Savannah with a stop in Macon. It was named for a race horse which had been named for Abraham Lincoln’s mother. The train left Savannah at seven o’clock each morning for the six-hour run to Atlanta and made the return trip at six o’clock each night. [Full Story »]

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has just announced plans to reduce our military budget by eliminating the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., and seeking deep cuts elsewhere in the budget. He said that the cut will eliminate up to 3,000 contractors as well as removing redundancy from the nation’s military structure. This one cut will reduce the military budget by $240 million a year. Several families were at the Colbert Independence Day festival with children being pulled in “Radio Flyer” red wagons. My brothers and I received one of their wagons for Christmas one year. Contrary to the claims of the company, it didn’t last very long. [Full Story »]

Georgia was still a young colony when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Founded in 1733 in Savannah, she was only 43 years old at the time. The number of native-born Georgians was small. That is why none of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia were natives. [Full Story »]
