And old political concept is experiencing a rebirth of sorts. That is the idea of state sovereignty. The final paragraph of the United States’ Declaration of Independence claims sovereignty for the several states, not for the states as a single union: “We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America — solemnly publish and declare that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states — and as free and independent states they have the full power — to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do.” [Full Story »]

Haying season is here. The row crops have had their last plowing, side dressing (sodium Nitrate) has been applied to the corn, and the cycle of activity on the farm is at a lull while the crops mature. Harvest season will be here soon. [Full Story »]

The Madison County Industrial Authority has finally lined up enough financing to proceed with the Dogsboro water treatment plant. The facility is designed to provide water treatment for several areas around the Dogsboro area. Several large tracts in the area have been zoned for commercial development, but little progress has been made due to lack of infrastructure. Two of the three key facilities are in place. There is a good supply of water and highways in the area. [Full Story »]

During his trip to Africa recently, President Obama said that “Slavery’s past should be taught in the U.S.” Finally, our president has made a statement with which I can agree. I think the history of slavery should be taught in our schools, as long as the complete story is told. [Full Story »]

An Athens landmark went up in flames last week. The old Georgia Theatre on Lumpkin Street in downtown Athens was heavily damaged by fire of an unknown origin. There was an immediate call for efforts to rebuild the old theatre. People were quick to point out the building’s historic value.

You often hear the claim that ours is a government of law. The idea is that government draws its rights to govern from a series of legal principles, and not from the will of some dictator or king. Those principles are established by three important documents, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Why do people hate? What filled an abortion protestor with so much hatred and anger that he murdered the doctor? How did an American who converted to Islam become so filled with hatred that he shot and killed a young man for simply wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army? Why did a U.S. veteran live a lifetime of hatred that finally caused him to attack and kill a guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.? [Full Story »]
