There’s been a lot of bad poetry written about spring. And I’ve contributed paper scraps to the great compost heap of odes to daffodils and redbirds, words that don’t really fly. When you approach the old Madison County Courthouse in Danielsville from the south, you will see a marble statue next to the building. Do you have any idea who it is and why it is there? It is a replica of one of the two statues that represents Georgia in our national capital. It is of Doctor Crawford W. Long. [Full Story »]

The Mother’s Day card is yellowed with age but its message is still clear. Forty years or so ago, a little girl gave it to her Aunt Syble, the woman who lovingly cared for her while her mother worked. Handwritten inside is “to my second mother.” [Full Story »]

Thanks to Frank Gillispie for devoting his last column to the subject of the Fair Tax. This is a subject that deserves fair consideration by Congress. The Fair Tax is a consumption-based tax that would totally replace the current federal income tax system.
