Dear Editor:

Recent letters to the editor debate whether Barack Obama is experienced enough to be president — being that if not, then by default logic John McCain is second choice. While McCain is almost liberal enough for me to vote for, I fear too many people are confusing or equating experience with capability. Experience does not equal sound judgment.

Gov. Sonny Perdue recently said he’d like to see guns allowed in non-secure areas of the Atlanta airport. State legislators relaxed gun restrictions this year in state parks, restaurants that serve alcohol and on mass transit. [Full Story »]

About this time one year ago I revealed in this column that I had just had major surgery to remove a cancer from my colon. I wrote that my doctors said my chances of full recovery were good because the cancer had been detected before it started to spread to other parts of my body. I praised my doctors, especially Dr. Hart who had insisted that I have the test that discovered the cancer. [Full Story »]

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Madison County School System for their outstanding job in making this year’s school opening a success. The task of moving an entire middle school, as well as opening the Ninth Grade Academy and Colt Academy within a few short months, was tremendous.

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to the letter from Joanne P. White of Danielsville, Aug. 7, “King Obama is not our savior.” I found Ms. White’s opinions regarding Barack Obama to be biased, emotionally charged, and not based on fact. Ms. White seems threatened by Mr. Obama’s popularity. She irrationally blames his popularity on the media, young people, the black vote, and even claims the middle class is trying to gain salvation.

Joanne White is correct. Barack Obama is not our savior. Fortunately, he is just a man running for office who happens to be unusually astute, eloquent, and skilled at debate and respectful disagreement. On top of that, he appears to be dedicated to trying to make the world a better place.

When a citizen exercises the right to free speech in order to influence the outcome of an upcoming election, I believe that person takes on a responsibility to be as accurate and clear-headed as possible. The angry letter in last week’s paper whose only legitimate charge against presidential candidate Barack Obama is that he is too popular, and which failed to make even one legitimate point on behalf of John McCain, failed both tests, and both candidates deserve better.

Finally, someone is getting around to addressing the problem of persistent poverty. Persistent poverty is described as a family that has remained on the poverty rolls for three or more census periods (30 years). Some researchers have discovered that some families are now in the third generation of welfare recipients. Some groups, like One Athens in Clarke County are developing new plans to attack the problem. [Full Story »]
