In response to the Oct. 22 edition, I had to respond to “Victim’s family expresses disappointment in ‘not guilty’ verdict.” It is indeed a sad day when a guilty person walks free. I wish that I could tell you that it would have been a different verdict if it had been a judge who decided, but I can’t.

I wasn’t prepared to speak at Mr. Polk Gholston’s service recently, but I must say something about what his family has meant to Comer Elementary School. I don’t have the statistics of how many years or the amount of donations the Gholston family has given our school, and I don’t think Mr. Gholston would think that the length or the amount would be important.

The recent salmonella outbreak that has been traced back to peanut butter made by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) has left many consumers questioning the safety of peanut products. The deaths and illnesses caused by this outbreak are disturbing and regrettable. The reported sanitation conditions at the processing facility that led to the outbreak should not be tolerated. I’m a farmer, but I’m also a consumer. My family and I eat peanut butter and peanut products, just like you.

Backroom politics were on display Monday night in Comer as the city council decided to split in half a quiet residential neighborhood. After hushed whispers in a small back room of city hall, the council called the meeting to order, quickly voted and announced their decision to rezone a house on Madison Street to R2.
